Dead Soul Friendships
DOES YOUR FRIENDSHIP HAVE A SOUL?
What does being in a “dead soul friendship” feel like? Who wins? Who loses? Why are we even in it? And how easy is it to walk away? Friendships go through cycles, seasons, but sometimes it’s time to face the music … can’t give CPR to a cadaver.
The least we can do is own up to what it is and what it’s not…
“Dead Soul Friendship”
Our friendship has no soul.
It resembles the skeleton model in my 8th grade anatomy class
Bones dolefully dangling on rollers
Being lifelessly pushed around by disinterested pushers
It’s like excessively watering a fake plant
Attending a wedding just for the food
And training for a marathon no one shows up to
Our friendship feels like a mundane chore
An obligatory load of laundry
An endlessly dirty sink
And bed sheets with perpetual stains
Our friendship is like a game of Scrabble
Having to arrange all the letters in the right place
Before formulating a conversation
Our friendship is like a game of Monopoly
Taking out emotional loans never to be paid back
And only gaining relevance through transactions
Our friendship is no friendship at all.
It’s a lose-lose game.
I lose.
You lose.
The truth is…
I waited naively by the door.
But your soul never ever came.
